Course Description

This course offers you comprehensive knowledge and insights into leadership dynamics and how to apply them to contemporary leadership practices across various contexts. It emphasizes helping you identify and understand key leadership traits, behaviors, styles, and approaches, highlighting the critical role of effective leadership in shaping strategic decisions within organizations. You will focus on cultivating a global leadership mindset by developing authentic, adaptive, emotionally, and culturally intelligent leadership skills and strategies to proactively address challenges in an ever-evolving work environment.

This course also includes a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experience and a Career Development Learning (CDL) experience, allowing you to apply and evaluate your knowledge and skills in a real or simulated workplace setting, with industry feedback playing a key role in your learning experience.

On successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

CLO1: Critically analyse and apply leadership theories and models to various organizational situations while researching current leadership challenges in contemporary workplace settings. CLO2: Discuss and apply global leadership competencies by focusing on people, leveraging business knowledge, and developing cultural and emotional intelligence, while emphasizing ethical and socially responsible leadership practices. CLO3: Critically evaluate complex strategies, processes, and issues to communicate and apply key leadership principles to meet the diverse needs of different stakeholders. CLO4: Utilise critical self-reflection to foster leadership growth and development. CLO5: Incorporate feedback from industry experts and leaders to improve leadership skills and seize opportunities for leadership development. Overview of Learning Activities

In this course, you will be encouraged to be an active learner, engaging in a variety of in-class and online activities designed to enhance your leadership skills. You will critically compare course materials with real-world situations, applying what you learn to enhance your practice as an aspiring leader. Your learning will be supported through individual and group work, including reflective exercises, prescribed readings, personal development activities, games, and problem-solving tasks. Collaboration with peers on set tasks or projects will also be a crucial aspect of the course. In addition, guest speakers and leaders will provide valuable insights to deepen your understanding and foster real-world connections. The course is designed to help you apply leadership thinking in real-world business contexts.

Overview of Assessment

The assessment tasks, their weighting and the course learning outcomes to which they are aligned are as follows:

Assessment 1: 20% Linked CLOs: 1, 2 Assessment 2: 40% Linked CLOs: 1,3 (WIL) Assessment 3: 40% Linked CLOs: 1,4, 5 (WIL) For classes begging prior to 21 July 2025Assessment Task 1: 20% Linked CLOs: 1, 2 Assessment Task 2: 30% Linked CLOs: 1, 3 Assessment Task 3: 50% Linked CLOs: 1, 3,4. Work Integrated Learning (WIL) This course includes a work-integrated learning component, which is a key part of one of the assessments. In this component, students will have the opportunity to engage directly with an industry-based project. This practical experience allows students to apply the theoretical knowledge they have gained throughout the course to real-world challenges. The work-integrated learning component is designed to enhance employability by equipping students with the skills and experience needed to thrive in their future careers. This WIL activity will be assessed in assessment 2 and will be marked by the Teaching Team at the SOM.
Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or in online forums through individual and group feedback on practical exercises and by individual consultation.
