Course Description

This course will develop your capacity with broad practical and theoretical knowledge regarding the structure of games and the role of games in wider contexts. It will give you an overview of the practical and conceptual knowledge you need to understand the structure and role of games.

Emphasis will be placed on building a contemporary knowledge of game studies and game design research and how the two forms of research interrelate.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes 

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:  

  • Apply a body of conceptual and practical knowledge, and game art and design skills, to address other forms of media and communication.
  • Critically analyse how games and play have specific local and global contexts.


Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Critically discuss and evaluate major aesthetic, cultural and theoretical developments in game studies.
  2. Describe complex structures, history and conventions of game design.
  3. Critically examine and discuss contemporary game studies literature.
  4. Evaluate and apply different game studies methods.
