Course Description
This course explores a variety of traditional and contemporary forms of poetry while encouraging you to practise your own writing. You analyse selected poems and experiment with form and style, learning to use devices such as rhyme, imagery and metaphor to support your writing. You consider the idea of poetry as story telling and performance, and by writing and workshopping your original pieces you are given the opportunity to discover your own poetic voice. You also investigate possible markets and opportunities for publishing your work, such as a class poetry anthology.

Program Learning Outcomes
In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
- identify and employ writing and editing techniques; principles and practice of communication and writing for different audiences; emerging digital media and trends and developments in the publishing industry
- identify, analyse and reflect on relevant trends in writing and publishing in both local and international contexts.
Course Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- demonstrate your knowledge of poetic forms and styles
- identify commonly used poetic devices such as metaphor, assonance etc.
- show skills in evaluating and editing your own writing and that of others
- explore techniques used in performance poetry and ways of conveying meaning through voice, action and body language.
Overview of Learning Activities
The learning activities included in this course are:
- lectures, which provide the framework for exploring different kinds of feature writing and developing your skills as a poet
- class exercises and activities designed to clarify course content and practise relevant skills
- writing workshops to assist development of writing techniques with feedback from peers and teacher
- independent research and study, working through the course requirements as presented in classes, online and through learning materials.

Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.
Task 1: Proposal and presentation, 15%, CLO 1, 2, 3
Task 2: Poetry folio 1, 35%, CLO 3, 4
Task 3: Poetry folio 2 and performance, 50%, CLO 3, 4
