Course Description

This course is only available to Honours students enrolled in BH066 Bachelor of Media and Communication (Honours).

In this course you will undertake self-directed research and study that is directly related to your honours research project as preparation for Research Practice Two, in which you will finalise your research project. 

If you are enrolled in this course as a component of your Bachelor Honours Program, your overall mark will contribute to the calculation of the weighted average mark (WAM).

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The following program learning outcomes are developed and assessed in this course:

  • creatively and critically develop meaningful problems and synthesise research within media and communication in local and global contexts
  • develop deep knowledge of your field from international vantage points and exercise critical thinking to show its relevance to contemporary media and communication
  • use sophisticated, self directed research as an integral part of your creative and critical reflective practice to innovate in knowledge creation


Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • articulate key questions, debates and concerns in your discipline in the context of a research project;
  • explore a range of applied research activities relevant to a research project that adapts knowledge in diverse contexts; and
  • undertake independent research in an area of media and communication


Overview of Learning Activities

The key activities you will undertake are different forms of research, using library resources to gather relevant material, viewing other relevant works and projects, and reading the key literature that is related to your individual project. The main activities will be finding references and resources; reading, viewing or listening to them; compiling notes; and maintaining a bibliography.


Overview of Learning Resources

The key resources you will use are in the University library (and other research libraries), and other collecting institutions that may contain material relevant to your project (other libraries, galleries, archives). In addition, you will utilise some form of bibliographic management tool, and a variety of online resources to document and store your research activities, including a research blog, citation manager, and a social bookmarking service.


Overview of Assessment

In this course you will initially receive an interim grade at the end of semester one (specifically an NEX grade), which will be finalised once your thesis or project and exegesis has been examined at the completion of COMM2791 Research Practice Two.

The mark the you receive for Research Practice One will be finalised to reflect the mark for Research Practice Two (i.e. the mark for both courses will be the mark received for the thesis or project and exegesis).

The final outcome of your assessments will contribute to the Weighted Assessment Mean (WAM), which is used to calculate the classification of your Honours Degree. Please see the WAM student information page for more information on the WAM and how it is calculated.
