Course Description

In this course you will investigate how service design uses human-centred methods and approaches to improve productivity and quality of services. Communication designers are well positioned to plan and take an effective role in collaborating with other disciplines for service design.

You will investigate service design principles through a research-led process that uses human-centred design methodology. It will include a variety of methods, tools and ‘scaffolds’ to investigate real world problems.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

You will be assessed on your development against the following program learning outcomes:

- Determine and apply the specialist knowledge and technical skills required to creatively solve problems, demonstrating expert judgement and ethical responsibility relating to your professional practice and discipline
- Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on complex theories and recent developments, both local and international, to extend and challenge knowledge and practice in your field.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Articulate and deepen knowledge of how design supports strategic activities in a range of fields, including corporate, social and public sectors.
  2. Apply a range of design research principles such as thinking in critical, systematic and holistic ways to dissect complex systems and issues.
  3. Generate knowledge through exploration and communicate this knowledge through visual language.
  4. Create and evaluate service design solutions to real world problems, in terms of existing and emerging disciplinary and interdisciplinary professional practice.

Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in learning that involves a range of online activities such as studios, project work, lectures, tutorials, and discussions.

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.

A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources that are relevant to the focus of your own learning.

There are services available to support your learning, including the University Library and Study Support services. For further information, please visit the Library page on the RMIT University website and the myRMIT student portal.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment may include presentations, projects and may be done individually and in teams.

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
