Course Description

This course will provide you with knowledge and develop skills required to undertake an environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) in accordance with internationally recognised standards. Life cycle assessment is a key methodology used to quantify the environmental impacts of a product or service over its full life cycle. The course will address key components and methodologies associated with the LCA framework and draw connections to contemporary areas of interest such as environmental product claims and certification schemes. Course content will be delivered via lectures and practical tutorials involving specialist LCA software.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

On completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Identify and apply life cycle assessment modelling techniques in a decision making context.
  2. Model and evaluate the life cycle environmental impacts of material, product or service systems using contemporary life cycle assessment methods
  3. Develop and critically assess life cycle models using specialist life cycle assessment software
  4. Communicate life cycle assessment studies using written (to LCA best-practice standards) and verbal communication

Overview of Learning Activities

Learning activities include face to face lectures. group-based tutorials, group discussions, computer laboratory sessions, and individual and team based assessment tasks. Learning activities are designed to address the course learning outcomes and will be based on simulated professional contexts. Employability skills (eg. communication skills, project management skills) will be fostered throughout the semester.

Course-related resources and assessment tasks will be provided on the Blackboard Learning Management System, which is accessed through myRMIT.
