MATH2200 Introduction to Probability and Statistics, or equivalent.
AERO2378 Aircraft Systems or AERO2355 Systems Engineering, or equivalent.


Course Description

The aviation industry is growing rapidly in the global economy with the emergence of new Low Cost Carriers and the increasing strength of major airlines growing their fleets to meet the current demands of travel. This has implications on the environment and climate change. The future of the aviation industry depends on policy makers being able to make this growth sustainable and address the issues of climate change and other environmental impacts of the aviation industry. The aviation and the aerospace industry have taken positive steps towards minimising the effects of environmental impact. This course discusses the current steps being taken to address environmental issues in the aviation and the aerospace industry, the technological advancements being made towards a sustainable future and the effect of policies like a carbon tax on industry.

This course also aims to teach you important skills that will enable you to operate effectively as a professional within your work environment. All professionals are technically competent in a particular specialist area; however, technical skills are only part of the range of skills that aviation professionals use every day. They are also required to work in teams to solve complex problems and communicate their solutions effectively.

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes:

1. Needs, context and systems:
• Identify, interpret and analyse stakeholder needs, establish priorities and the goals, constraints and uncertainties of the system (social, cultural, legislative, environmental, business etc.), using systems thinking, while recognising ethical implications of professional practice.

2. Problem-solving and design:
• Apply problem solving, design and decision-making methodologies to develop components, systems and/ or processes to meet specified requirements, including innovative approaches to synthesise alternative solutions, concepts and procedures.

3. Abstraction and modelling:
• Apply abstraction, mathematics and discipline fundamentals to analysis, design and operation, using appropriate computer software, laboratory equipment and other devices, ensuring model applicability, accuracy and limitations.

Upon completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Locate and assess information relevant to the aerospace and aviation community.
  2. Communicate effectively and confidently with the aerospace and aviation industries and also with various communities at large.
  3. Examine, identify and formulate problem statement, assessment and solutions.
  4. Outline a systems approach appropriate to aerospace and aviation industries operational practices.
  5. Interpret data and recognise relevancy when solving problems.
  6. Synthesise information from various resources to identify solutions to problems within the aerospace and aviation community.
  7. Develop knowledge, methodologies and principles to various tasks within aerospace and aviation industries operational practices.
