Course Description

This course will introduce you to a special topic in engineering that is outside of the regular curriculum of your program. The course enables external or internal lecturers with specialist knowledge to offer a special elective course in their area of expertise

Please note that if you take this course for a bachelor honours program, your overall mark in this course will be one of the course marks that will be used to calculate the weighted average mark (WAM) that will determine your award level.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following program learning outcomes:

  • In-depth understanding of specialist bodies of knowledge within the engineering discipline.
  • Discernment of knowledge development and research directions within the engineering discipline.
  • Application of established engineering methods to complex engineering problem solving.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

Upon successful completion of the course, you should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an appreciation of the application of fundamental principles at an advanced level appropriate to complex problems in a “Special Topic” as covered in this course
  2. Apply the basics of the “Special Topic” to common but complex practical or novel engineering problems
  3. Demonstrate ability to utilise the different skills required in working in teams and working individually 
  4. Communicate accurately in formats appropriate to a professional engineering context, in both oral and written media 


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be exposed to a variety of teaching methods including conventional lectures, tutorials, and project work if the topic permits. Lectures will provide a theoretical understanding of both the technical and generic skills and the assessment is geared towards the students applying this information

A variety of reference books and other materials will be recommended for different assessment tasks. There is no prescribed text which covers all the course content.
