Course Description

In this course, you will use building information modelling (BIM) as a methodology for the management of construction projects. You will develop  an understanding of how construction techniques,  estimating, and process planning are applied in a BIM environment; you will apply and integrate skills and knowledge developed so far in the Construction Management program to manage project information through BIM tools and processes. In the course you will also analyse and address the challenges faced by the construction industry in adopting and implementing BIM.

Note:  If you are enrolled in this course as a component of your Bachelor Honours Program, your overall mark will contribute to the calculation of the weighted average mark (WAM).  See the WAM information web page for more information

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
PLO1. Determine and apply knowledge of complex construction management theory to your professional practice  and/or further study
PLO2. Professionally communicate with a range of audiences, demonstrating in depth knowledge of the discipline and of the needs of diverse construction management stakeholders
PLO3.  Formulate evidence based solutions to industry problems or issues through the application of logical, critical and creative thinking, intellectual agility and the analysis, synthesis and application of theoretical, digital, human and technical skills
PLO4. Utilise appropriate methods and techniques to design and execute research based or professionally focused construction management projects, demonstrating capacity for independent and collaborative learning,  addressing real world industry issues
PLO5. Collaborate effectively with others, within and across disciplines and demonstrate independent intellectual agility and autonomy to solve problems and address industry issues and imperatives
PLO6. Critically examine and reflect on aspects relevant to the profession in both a global and national context, regarding indigenous issues, diversity and inclusion, and sustainability.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

CLO1: Interpret and apply principles of construction management in a BIM environment

CLO2: Identify and address barriers to the implementation of BIM in the construction industry

CLO3: Analyse theoretical knowledge and reflect on professional practice to develop solutions to construction planning and design problems

CLO4: Apply BIM modelling skills for project budgeting and scheduling

Overview of Learning Activities

You will be able to engage in a variety of workshops. Learning activities in this course include class discussions and problem-based exercises in a BIM-enabled learning environment. This course is delivered in a face-to-face mode. Both lectures and workshops are face to face in the class, and teaching materials (i.e. workshop instructions and lecture slides) are available online in Canvas.

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.

There are services available to support your learning through the University Library. The Library provides guides on academic referencing and subject specialist help as well as a range of study support services. For further information, please visit the Library page on the RMIT University website and the myRMIT student portal.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Assessment includes the following (Melbourne City, Singapore and Hong Kong Campuses) :

Task 1: BIM Execution Plan, 20%, CLOs 1,2

Task 2: 4D BIM Model, 20%, CLOs 3,4

Task 3: BIM Report, 40%, CLOs 1,2,4

Task 4: Quizzes, 20%, CLOs 1,2,3,4

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks

Equitable Learning Services (ELS) provide support and equal opportunities for students with a disability, long-term illness and/or mental health condition and primary carers of individuals with a disability. You can contact the ELS if you would like to find out more: You can also contact the course coordinator or the program coordinator if you would like to find out more.
