Course Description
An important consideration in the property sector and the wider community is the formulation and administration of policy and legislature over the use and development of land. In this course you will examine Australian land resources and land development polices as determined by the different levels of Australian government. The objectives of this course are to develop your knowledge of the Australian public policy and how this governs land use and development, and to expand your understanding of the relation between the property sector and wider regulatory and policy frameworks.

In this course you will develop the following program capabilities:
1 Determine and apply knowledge of complex property and valuation theory to your professional practice and/or further study
2 Professionally communicate to a range of audiences, demonstrating in depth knowledge of the discipline and of the needs of diverse property and valuation stakeholders
3 Apply logical, critical and creative thinking to analyse, synthesise and apply theoretical knowledge, and technical skills, to formulate evidenced based solutions to industry problems or issues

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- Analyse and apply Australian statutory planning processes, including the key provisions of Federal and State Planning Acts, to determine and communicate the legality of land use and development opportunities to key stakeholders
- Interpret and apply statutory planning policies to determine whether land use and development opportunities meet Australian statutory requirements
- Analyse and apply Australian land resources and issues policies in Australia, including Native Title, to determine compliance in the use and development of land
- Interpret planning regulations and apply these to land use zoning.

Learning in this course consists of lectures and workshops, and will include activities such as case study exercises, and class discussions.

A textbook may be required for this course which will be supplemented with current and recent reading material, including legislature and case studies.
Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment consists of:
Task 1: In class test. Weighting: 15%. Individual assessment: Analyse and apply Australian statutory planning processes, including the key provisions of Federal and State Planning Acts, to determine and communicate the legality of land use and development opportunities to key stakeholders. CLO1.
Task 2: in class test. Weighting: 15%. Individual assessment: Analyse and apply Australian statutory planning processes, including the key provisions of Federal and State Planning Acts, to determine and communicate the legality of land use and development opportunities to key stakeholders. CLO1.
Task 3: Development planning report. Weighting: 40%. Group assessment: Interpret and apply statutory planning policies to determine whether land use and development opportunities meet Australian statutory requirements. Analyse and apply Australian land resources and issues policies in Australia, including Native Title, to determine compliance in the use and development of land. Interpret planning regulations and apply these to land use zoning. CLO2, CLO3, CLO4.
Task 4: Presentation of development planning analysis. Weighting: 30%. Group assessment: Interpret and apply statutory planning policies to determine whether land use and development opportunities meet Australian statutory requirements. Analyse and apply Australian land resources and issues policies in Australia, including Native Title, to determine compliance in the use and development of land. Interpret planning regulations and apply these to land use zoning. CLO2, CLO3, CLO4.
