OENG1167 Engineering Capstone Project A is a strict co-requisite i.e. you must be concurrently enrolled in OENG1167 Engineering Capstone Project A.


Course Description

This course is an extension of Engineering Capstone Project A for students undertaking an industry sponsored or a research oriented project. You will extend your project to deliver an enhanced outcome and it provides you with an enhanced work integrated learning experience.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The objective of this course is to further develop your capabilities to work as a professional engineer in industry or research.
On successful completion of this course you will have developed or extended your skills and capabilities in many of the following:

  • knowledge of science and engineering;
  • problem identification, formulation and solution;
  • utilisation of a systems approach to design and operational performance;
  • to communicate effectively, not only with engineering personnel but also with the community at large;
  • to function effectively as an individual and in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams;
  • to be a leader or manager as well as effective team member;
  • social, cultural, global and environmental responsibilities of professional engineering personnel;
  • the need for sustainable design and development;
  • commitment to professional and ethical responsibilities; and
  • the need to undertake lifelong learning.


Completion of a supervised industry sponsored or a research oriented project.  The objective of this course is to further develop your capabilities to work as a professional engineer in industry or research.

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Apply critical and creative thinking in the design of an engineering project (problem definition, objectives setting).
  2. Plan and manage your time effectively.
  3. Consider the business context and commercial positioning of an engineering project (use appropriate project management techniques).
  4. Apply knowledge of the ‘real world’ situations that a professional engineer can encounter.
  5. Utilise fundamental knowledge and skills in engineering and apply it effectively on a project.
  6. Orally present and demonstrate your product (project outcome) to peers, academics, general and industry community.
  7. Write a project thesis in a fluent and coherent style.
  8. Present a technical project in a fluent and compelling way.
  9. Demonstrate proficiency in your chosen project area.

You wil also be able to: (i) solve problems encountered in the project and make decisions using sound engineering methodologies; (ii) communicate effectively both in writing and verbally and develop sound presentation skills; (iii) undertake self-directed study and (iv) identify and define sustainability problems and/or issues relating to the project

Learning resources include the RMIT Library, and resources supplied by your industry sponsor or the research group sponsoring your project.

Assessment is based on your reflective journal, seminar presentation, technical paper, and performance appraisals from the industry or research supervisor and your academic supervisor.
