Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Either Engineering Design 4B (EEET2268) or Professional Engineering Advanced Project Part B (EEET2350) is a strict co-requisite i.e. you must be concurrently enrolled in either EEET2268 or EEET2350. Furthermore, consultation with the Course Coordinator is required before being permitted to enrol in this course.

Course Description

This course is an extension of Engineering Design 4B or Professional Engineering Advanced Project Part B for students undertaking an industry sponsored or a research oriented project. You will extend your project to deliver an enhanced outcome and it provides you with an enhanced work integrated learning experience.

Please note that if you take this course for a bachelor honours program, your overall mark in this course will be one of the course marks that will be used to calculate the weighted average mark (WAM) that will determine your award level. (This applies to students who commence enrolment in a bachelor honours program from 1 January 2016 onwards. See the WAM information web page for more information (www1.rmit.edu.au/browse;ID=eyj5c0mo77631).

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

At undergraduate level this course develops the following Program Learning Outcomes:

1.5 Knowledge of contextual factors impacting the engineering discipline.
1.6 Understanding of the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities and bounds of contemporary engineering practice in the specific discipline.
2.1 Application of established engineering methods to complex engineering problem solving.
2.2 Fluent application of engineering techniques, tools and resources.
2.3 Application of systematic engineering synthesis and design processes.
2.4 Application of systematic approaches to the conduct and management of engineering projects.
3.1 Ethical conduct and professional accountability.
3.2 Effective oral and written communication in professional and lay domains.
3.3 Creative, innovative and pro-active demeanour.
3.4 Professional use and management of information.
3.5 Orderly management of self, and professional conduct.

At postgraduate level this course develops the following Program Learning Outcomes:

  • Be able to apply problem solving approaches to work challenges and make decisions using sound engineering methodologies
  • Be able to apply a systematic design approach to engineering projects and have strong research and design skills in their stream
  • Communicate effectively across all modes: listen, speak, write and draw
  • Apply the principles of lifelong learning to any new challenge

On successful completion of this course you will have developed or extended your skills and capabilities in many of the following:

  • knowledge of science and engineering;
  • problem identification, formulation and solution;
  • utilisation of a systems approach to design and operational performance;
  • to communicate effectively, not only with engineering personnel but also with the community at large;
  • to function effectively as an individual and in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams;
  • to be a leader or manager as well as effective team member;
  • social, cultural, global and environmental responsibilities of professional engineering personnel;
  • the need for sustainable design and development;
  • commitment to professional and ethical responsibilities; and
  • the need to undertake lifelong learning.

Overview of Learning Activities

The extension of your individual design project provides the backbone to this course. This is a project-based learning activity that will require you to exercise many of the skills required in engineering employment. Project work will help you to connect theory with practice. Project work must involve:

  • Weekly meetings with your academic supervisor recorded by meeting minutes with action points.
  • Detailed project plan with a comprehensive timeline and milestones.
  • Systematic documentation.
  • A comprehensive literature survey.
  • Actual hardware/software/presentation/documentation work required to produce the deliverables on time.

A clear differentiation must exist between the work completed in the foundation course (EEET2268 / EEET2350) and this extension course. Students will be required to articulate and demonstrate different outcomes for both courses.

Overview of Learning Resources

  • Library and electronic resources.
  • You will be expected to have access suitable computing equipment for system development. Required software will be made available where possible.
  • Relevant specialised equipment and software will be made available in laboratories and for loan where possible.
  • You are expected to tailor the scope of your project to resource availability.
  • Resources provided by your Industry Sponsor or Research Group.

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment is based on your reflective journal, seminar presentation, technical report and performance appraisals from the Industry or Research Supervisor and your Academic Supervisor.
