Course Description

The aviation industry is growing rapidly in the global economy with the emergence of new Low-Cost Carriers and the increasing strength of major airlines growing their fleets to meet the current demands of travel. This has implications on the environment and climate change. The future of the aviation industry depends on aircraft and engine manufactures, airlines, airports, their respective suppliers and policy makers being able to make this growth sustainable and address the issues of climate change and other environmental impacts of the aviation industry. The aviation and the aerospace industry have taken positive steps towards minimising the effects of environmental impact. This course discusses the current steps being taken to address environmental issues in the aviation and the aerospace industry, the technological advancements being made towards a sustainable future and the effect of policies like a carbon tax on industry.

This course also aims to teach important skills that will enable you to operate effectively as a professional within the aviation work environment both nationally and internationally. All professionals are technically competent in a particular specialist area; however, technical skills are only part of the range of skills that aviation professionals use every day. They are also required to work in teams to solve complex problems and communicate their solutions effectively.  This course emphasises analytical, communication and team-working skills necessary for a successful accomplishment of aviation/aerospace projects in industrial, scientific and regulatory organisations.

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  1. Collect and elaborate information relevant to the aerospace and aviation community with focus on engineering sustainability aspects.
  2. Conduct detailed analysis and surveys to assess technology trends and identify potential solutions to key contemporary issues in aviation/aerospace.
  3. Communicate effectively and confidently (both orally and in writing) with the aerospace and aviation industries, national/international organisations (e.g., scientific, technical and regulatory) and also with other communities at large.
  4. Examine, identify and formulate problem statement, assessment and solutions.
  5. Outline a systems approach appropriate to aerospace and aviation industries operational practices.
  6. Synthesise information from various resources to identify solutions to problems within the aerospace and aviation community.

You will learn this course through pre-recorded lectures, directed reading, live lectorials, flipped classrooms and discussion, and an investigative research assignment. The learning process is reinforced through problem-based learning using case studies.
