Course Description
This course examines current practices in management of workplace environmental issues and develops skills in workplace environmental auditing.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Objective: To develop skills in recognising environmental aspects, developing management systems to control these aspects and understanding the process of auditing environment management systems.
Capability Development: This course will contribute to the following program capabilities (refer MC135 Program Guide):
C1 - Advanced and integrated understanding of workplace environmental management (Intermediate level)
C3 - Skills to investigate, analyse, synthesise and audit environmental information, problems, concepts and theories (Intermediate level)
C4 - Skills to generate solutions and evaluate their effectiveness (Intermediate level)
C5 - Communication skills to interpret workplace issues and justify decisions for specialist and non-specialist audiences (Intermediate level)
C6 – Technical and Communications skills to design and evaluate issues that contribute to professional practice or scholarship (Intermediate level)
C7 - Demonstrate the application of knowledge and skills with creativity and initiative to new situations in professional practice (Intermediate level)
Learning Outcomes: On completion of this course, you will be able to:
Manage environmental hazards in the workplace by using a systematic approach to their identification, risk evaluation, control and evaluation (auditing)
Develop, implement, evaluate and monitor the effectiveness of environmental protection programs for the workplace
Apply knowledge of legislation, standards and codes relevant to environmental hazards in day-to-day activities
Collect, analyse and use relevant literature and workplace data on environmental hazards in a systematic way with appropriate attention to ethical, legal and confidentiality constraints
Communicate with organisational stakeholders about environmental performance in a manner which recognises and makes appropriate use of the industrial framework and social context of the organisation
Overview of Learning Activities
You will be provided with on-line lectures and suggested readings which will address the key concepts and their application. You will be expected to attend face to face block mode workshops when the concepts will be further explored through examples, case studies and exercises. Your learning will be supported by virtual tutorials at regular intervals.
Individual and group projects within organisations will build your capacity to think critically and analytically. You will have to prepare written reports which will develop your communications skills.
You will then receive feedback on your academic progress during tutorial discussion and when assignments are returned.

Overview of Learning Resources
Students will be directed to a range of texts, journal articles and other web based material that provide a current understanding of the knowledge in this area.
Lectures and other learning materials will be available on myRMIT (Blackboard).
Eluminate and other web based tools may be used to provide on-line real time discussion in tutorials with students.

Assessment will consist of some combination of assignments, presentation, and/or end of semester exam.
