Course Description
This course enables you to demonstrate the flying skills and knowledge required to fly and manage a single engine aeroplane and prepares you to undertake the CASA Private Pilot Licence (PPL) flight test.
The flying hours in this course are designed to meet the CASA requirements and you will have the option to pay for any additional flying hours through a material fee should additional flight training be required.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) for Associate Degree in Aviation (Professional Pilots):
- Ability to apply a depth of knowledge in a range of industry practice fundamentals in contexts that are subject to change, and adapt knowledge and skills in a range of contexts.
- Demonstrate the application of skills and knowledge to adapt fundamental principles, concepts and techniques to known and unknown situations
- Problem identification, formulation and solution to unpredictable and sometimes complex problems.
- Utilise a systems approach to operational activities to identify, analyse and evaluate information and concepts from a range of sources.
Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
On completion of this course you should be able to demonstrate:
- Establish technical skills appropriate to the diversity of practice in the Aviation Industry.
- Apply a depth of knowledge in a range of industry practice fundamentals in contexts that are subject to change, and adapt knowledge and skills in a range of contexts.
- Developed broader perspective within the aviation industry, and external to it, and also to demonstrate ability to work with complex systems.
- Utilise a systems approach to operational activities to identify, analyse and evaluate information and concepts from a range of sources.
Overview of Learning Activities
Learning in this course will occur through Lectures, Tutorials, Assignments, Practical Demonstration (flight training devices), Classroom Discussion, Handouts, and Presentations. You will participate in classroom theory lessons and use aircraft.
You will have pre-flight briefings, one-on-one instructor briefings, in-flight practical demonstrations and practice, post-flight briefings using a variety of teaching aids.
Overview of Learning Resources
You will be required to use CASA and other texts and as well as receiving classroom handouts. Videos, practical demonstrations and discussions in the classroom will enhance your learning.
Overview of Assessment
This course has no hurdle requirements
Assessment Task 1: PPL Navigation phase flight check
Weighting towards final grade (%): 100
This assessment supports all CLO’s 1-4
Practical demonstration to a flight instructor of the flying competence of the student to PPL standard as specified by CASA in accordance with the CASA Manual of Standards.

Note: RMIT will facilitate your CASA PPL Navigation phase flight check and the associated cost of the first attempt is incorporated in the course fee. A pilot student who is not able to successfully demonstrate competency after three (3) flight examinations will be subject to a school-level review and can be instructed to repeat the entire flying unit.
