2. A holder of CASA Commercial Pilot Licence

Course Description

This course is to enable you to operate an aeroplane under the Instrument Flight Rules, in Instrument Meteorological Conditions.
You will be prepared to undertake the CASA Multi-Engine Command instrument Rating (MECIR).

This course includes Work Integrated Learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/or community is integral into your experience.

Note: The Practical component of this course utilises a multi-engine aircraft as well as a fixed base flight simulator. 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) for AD023: 

  • Demonstrating the application of skills and knowledge to adapt advanced principles, concepts and techniques to known and unknown situations 
  • Demonstrating critical analysis and problem solving, where you will develop the ability to undertake problem identification, formulation and solution to unpredictable and complex problems. 
  • Professional Practice, where you will demonstrate responsibility and accountability for own learning and work in collaboration with others within broad parameters.
     


Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

On completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate all appropriate checks

  3. Manage the cockpit efficiently 
  4. Climb the aeroplane 
  5. Manage the en-route progress of the flight within tolerances specified in CASA rules and regulations for altitude, navigation, and general flight sequences 
  6. Manage the use of radio navigation aids 
  7. Climb, steep and descend turns 
  8. Descent 
  9. Hold patterns 
  10. Circle approaches
  11. Instrument approach 
  12. Miss approaches to land under a variety of conditions 
  13. Recover from unusual attitudes with full and partial instrument availability

 

 


Overview of Learning Activities

Learning in this course will occur through Lectures, Tutorials, Assignments, Practical Demonstration (flight training devices), Classroom Discussion, Handouts, and Presentations. You will participate in classroom theory lessons and use aircraft based at the Point Cook Campus. 

You will have pre-flight briefings, one-on-one instructor briefings, in-flight practical demonstrations and practice, post-flight briefings using a variety of teaching aids.

Details of Learning Activities

The learning activities included in this course are:

  • Attendance at lectures where syllabus material will be presented and explained.
  • Completion of tutorial questions and possibly workshop projects designed to give further practice in the application of flying theory to given situations, and to give feedback on student progress and understanding;
  • Completion of class exercises consisting of numerical calculations and other factors requiring an integrated understanding of the subject matter; and
  • Private study, working through the course as presented in classes, information gathered from practical demonstrations and learning materials, and gaining practice at solving flight related calculations
  • Completion of flight training exercises


 


Overview of Learning Resources

You will be required to use CASA and other texts and as well as receiving classroom handouts. Videos, practical demonstrations and discussions in the classroom will enhance your learning. You will also be instructed in a fixed based simulator.


Overview of Assessment

All hurdle requirements for this course are indicated clearly in the assessment regime that follows, against the relevant assessment task(s) and all have been approved by the College Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching). A hurdle requirement is necessary in order to demonstrate to an accrediting body (CASA) that students are competent and being sufficiently assessed against practice-focused professional standards.

 

Assessment Task 1: Final flight test - Hurdle Assessment

Weighting towards final grade  (%): 100%

This assessment supports all CLO’s 1-13

Practical demonstration to a CASA-approved test testing officer of the flying competence of the student to set standards as specified by the CASA Manual of Standards. A pilot student who is not able to successfully demonstrate competency after three flight examinations will be subject to a school-level review and can be instructed to repeat the entire flying unit.

Note 1: RMIT will facilitate your CASA MECIR flight test and the associated cost of the first attempt is incorporated in the course fee.
Note 2: CASA requires a pass in the CASA IREX Exam before you can attempt the CASA MECIR flight test
Note 3: You must be endorsed on the aircraft type utilised during your flight test
