Course Description

This course introduces you to an overview of cellular injury and disease processes and their impacts on the major body systems. You will study how the body systems respond to pathological changes in the major organs of the body and the effects of ageing on physiological functions of the organ systems. It also includes an overview of common pharmacological management. Key topics include: Introduction to disease processes; Body’s responses to injury; Disorders of the Nervous system; Disorders of the Musculo-Skeletal system; Disorders of the Endocrine system ; Disorders of the Cardiovascular system; Disorders of the Respiratory and Digestive systems; Introduction to Pharmacology; Analgesics and Anti-inflammatory drugs; Antihypertensive and Anti-coagulant drugs; Anti-psychotic drugs and other common groups of drugs.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for Associate Degree in Health Sciences:

1. access up to date discipline information/knowledge and ensure that decisions and actions are informed by a critical assessment of information

4. communicate effectively in a range of forms (written, oral) and with diverse audiences and cultural groups (community, clients and health professionals)
 


On completion of this course, students should be able to;
1. examine how disruption to the major systems of the body results in disease.
2. identify the major disease processes associated with ageing.
3. communicate effectively with a range of audiences using appropriate terminology for disease processes, clinical manifestations and prevention of diseases.
4. recognise pharmaceuticals used to treat common conditions.

 In this course you will learn through the following activities:
• Face to face teaching: to obtain an understanding of basic concepts that are required to undertake further study
• Online learning of medical terminology
• Personal reading (e.g. prescribed sections of textbooks and online materials): to reinforce/strengthen your understanding of the principles of disease processes
• Case studies and tutorial group activities
