Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
Required Concurrent Study
You should undertake following course/s at the same time as this course as it contains areas of knowledge and skills which are implemented together in practice.
- ONPS2343 Medical Radiations Physics 1 (Course ID 038594)
- RADI1125 Foundations of Professional Practice (Course ID 038253)
Alternatively, you may be able to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge before you start this course.
Contact your course coordinator if you think you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning.
Course Description
This course will introduce you to fundamental underpinning concepts essential for radiation therapy practice. You will develop knowledge and skills in routine techniques and patient care in radiation therapy. You will begin to build fundamental practical skills required of a Radiation Therapist
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for BP321 Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Radiations) (aligned to the Accreditation Standards of the Medical Radiations Practice Board of Australia):
Standard 1
- Use clinical information management systems appropriately (1.b)
- Understand and apply the different methods of imaging and treatment (1.c)
- Implement techniques for patient/client stabilisation and reproducibility of procedures and outcomes (1.f)
Standard 1C
- Use equipment and perform techniques to ensure reproducibility of the patient’s position for radiation therapy (1C.a)
- Perform localisation and pre-treatment imaging (1C.b)
- Perform treatment planning (1C.c)
Standard 2
- Practise in an ethical and professional manner, consistent with relevant legislation and regulatory requirements (2.a)
- Provide each patient/client with dignity and care (2.b)

- Communicate clearly, sensitively and effectively with the patient/client and their family or carers (3.a)
Standard 5
- Perform and provide safe radiation practice (5.a)
- Protect and enhance patient/client safety (5.b)
On successful completion of this course you should be able to:
- Describe and explain foundational elements of the radiation therapy pathway at simulation, dosimetry and treatment.
- Outline the general principles and practices of radiation therapy patient care.
- Recall technological principles, physics concepts and instrumentation that supports radiation therapy practice.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will participate in a range of learning activities including lectures, tutorials and computer based laboratory classes. Virtual Environment for Radiotherapy Training (VERT) tutorials, will be utilised to supplement this learning.
This course is supported by the Learning Management System (LMS), where the teaching schedule, lecture and lab resources and other relevant material to encourage self-directed learning, will be available.
You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.
Overview of Learning Resources
RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through myRMIT Studies Course.
There are services available to support your learning through the University Library. The Library provides guides on academic referencing and subject specialist help as well as a range of study support services.
