Course Description
Public policy deals with complex and often complicated issues and problems, where the nature of the issues at hand is unclear and the effects of policy interventions are difficult to predict. This course assists you to develop the applied analytical and problem-solving skills required to develop useful policy solutions.
You will examine real world issues and develop your capacity and confidence for policy design.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Upon successful completion of the course you will be able to:
- Confidently apply design thinking to policy issues and projects
- Use your judgment and strategic thinking capacity to engage with complex policy issues
- Scope, cost and propose strategic solutions for current circumstances and/or future challenges
- Effectively prepare and present strategic proposals and/or submissions
Overview of Learning Activities
Workshops will use current examples of strategic thinking and futures planning from government and non-government organisation policy contexts. You will have the opportunity to actively engage and develop your strategic thinking and problem solving skills through workshop activities which explore case studies, readings, and a diverse range of lecture and online course materials.

Course readings will be available via MyRMIT Studies. In addition RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.
Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on the above learning outcomes. Assessment tasks may include essays, case studies, reports and presentations. You will be required to complete assessment tasks equivalent to 5,000 words.
