Course Description
This course will provide you with an overview of interior design and decoration history from ancient times to current day, with a particular focus on Australian interiors and the impact of key genres.|
Movements in architecture, art, design, decorative arts, furniture and philosophy are explored as a means to interpreting and applying their relevance to the contemporary practice of the interior designer and decorator.
You will investigate and critically analyse socio-cultural, political, economic and aesthetic considerations and their influences.
You will select a particular area of interest for discussion and reflection through written analytical pieces from periods and movements such as The Classics, The Age of Ornamentation and the Aesthetic Individuals.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) of the AD020 Associate Degree in Interior Design:
3. Investigate and adapt knowledge of design history, theory and culture to contemporary interior decoration and design context and practice.
8. Apply initiative to work both independently and collaboratively and perform effectively as a member of a creative team with responsibility and accountability for your own learning and work.
Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:
1. Explore, appraise and describe key stylistic periods of interior design.
2. Examine and evaluate the influence of key interior design and decoration periods on contemporary practice
3. In collaboration with a group of your peers articulate your findings on a movement or style of interior design
4. Investigate, analyse, and correctly reference a broad range of sources of interior design and decoration genres and styles in digital format.
Overview of Learning Activities
Learning activities will include supervised project work, audio- visual presentations, independent research and library visits, excursions to galleries, exhibitions and museums, and internet access.
Overview of Learning Resources
A list of recommended learning resources will be provided including books, references and web sources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning. Student learning resources also include access to computer laboratories and relevant software.

Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
Assessment tasks in this course are either formative or summative. Formative tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered essential building blocks for the more substantial summative assessment tasks. Summative assessment tasks in this course are graded.
Assessment Task 1 Story Telling and Mythology(20%)
This task relates to the following course learning outcomes:

Assessment Task 2 Materials and Interior Elements (40%)
This task relates to the following course learning outcomes:
1. Explore, appraise and describe the key stylistic periods of interior design.
2. Examine and evaluate the influence of key interior design and decoration periods on contemporary practice
3. In collaboration with a group of your peers articulate your findings on a movement or style of interior design
4.Investigate, analyse, and correctly reference a broad range of sources of interior design and decoration genres and styles in digital format.
Assessment Task 3 Critical Essay - Looking through a new lens (40%)
This task relates to the following course learning outcomes:
1. Explore, appraise and describe the key stylistic periods of interior design.
2. Examine and evaluate the influence of key interior design and decoration periods on contemporary practice
4. Investigate, analyse, and correctly reference a broad range of sources of interior design and decoration genres and styles in digital format.
