Course Description

In this course you will establish a procedure for working as a professional in the interior design and decoration industry. You will work in teams to produce and evaluate a business proposal for an interior design consultancy. Using established operational small business strategies you will develop goals and objectives in line with industry standards and compliance. Further depth will be established through embedding these procedures into projects throughout the program. A particular focus on social media networking will address the newest techniques in marketing and a strong focus on entrepreneurship which will develop leadership skills. This course includes Career Directed Learning.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) of the AD020 Associate Degree in Interior Design:

5. Apply knowledge and skills of current business and professional practices relevant to the decoration and design industry.


On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

1. Develop a clear and coherent business plan for a small interior design and decoration consultancy in line with legal requirements.

2. Identify, analyse and evaluate current business systems and to implement amendments to operational procedures.

3. Develop a clear and coherent Portfolio that clearly communicates your skills as a designer

4. Problem solve to plan, organise and communicate your career goals and objectives clearly and in line with current industry practice

5. Identify, analyze and evaluate current design strengths and your promotion to the wider design community.

6. Explore and interpret the Design community and your role within that community.

Learning activities will include supervised project work, independent investigation, peer feedback, reflection, site visits, demonstrations, audio visual presentations, online learning (blogs and wiki), studio work, guest presenter demonstrations

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
Assessment tasks in this course are either formative or summative. Formative tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered essential building blocks for the more substantial summative assessment tasks. Summative assessment tasks in this course are graded.
Feedback throughout the course may be written, verbal or a combination of both.

This task relates to the following course learning outcomes:

Assessment Task 2 Individual Portfolio(40%) (Individual)
This task relates to the following course learning outcomes:
3. Develop a clear and coherent Portfolio that clearly communicates your skills as a designer
4. Problem solve to plan, organise and communicate your career goals and objectives clearly and in line with current industry practice
6. Explore and interpret the Design community and your role within that community.

Assessment Task 3 Business Model (40%) (Group)
This task relates to the following course learning outcomes:
1. Develop a clear and coherent business plan for a small interior design and decoration consultancy in line with legal requirements.
2. Identify, analyse and evaluate current business systems and to implement amendments to operational procedures
