Course Description

Case Studies in Urban Design introduces you to the processes of design and implementation for complex urban design projects. Structured through a series of analytical and critical investigations, (case studies), this course provides an opportunity for self-directed research into key urban projects locally and internationally.

Each Case Study uncovers the design ambitions, historical or theoretical precedents, economic drivers, political agendas, regulatory frameworks or other pertinent narratives underpinning the chosen project, presented through a written and visual document.
The course aims to expose you to the detailed, multidisciplinary workings of urban design practice through self-directed research, and develop a comprehensive yet practical disciplinary knowledge applicable to future design practice.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Analyse and interpret a selected range of contemporary urban design practices and issues in contemporary discourse;
  • Identify and critique the multidisciplinary frameworks and techniques employed in urban design practice;
  • Critically evaluate and assess qualitative, performative, regulatory and socioeconomic aspects of the built environment;
  • Apply advanced written and graphic communication skills to critically position and substantiate complex urban design ideas.

You will be assessed on your development of the following program learning outcomes in this course:

  • Demonstrate a comprehensive and detailed knowledge of key practices and projects in urban design history, theory and contemporary discourse
  • Interpret and evaluate urban design theories and practices at abstract and practical level

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities including:

  • Self-directed research and presentation of findings
  • Attending lectures and participating in class discussion
  • Interviews with key participants in the development of the project
  • Research through library holdings and online sources, indirect and primary sources
  • Written, visual and verbal presentation of research presented in progress and through a detailed final report
  • Critical and constructive feedback to peers
  • Online communication
