Course Description
This is an integrated course covering the anatomy, physiology pathology, pharmacology of therapeutics relevant to the cardiovascular and renal systems. It focuses on understanding disease processes and the rationale for drug therapy as well as describing the range of therapeutic strategies. It explores factors that affect drug disposition and adverse events in this therapeutic area. This course will undertake an examination of the human cardiovascular and renal systems in both health and disease to underpin an understanding of pharmacotherapy of common disorders. An understanding of cardiovascular and renal pathophysiology will be used to provide an appreciation of different approaches to treatment.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Upon successfully completion of this course you should be able to:
- describe the anatomy, physiology and disease processes involving the cardiovascular and renal systems.
- describe and discuss the mechanisms of action of drugs used to treat cardiovascular and renal diseasea
- discuss basic diagnosis and therapeutic indications for diseases involving the cardiovascular and renal systems.
- describe expected adverse events for commonly used drugs in this therapeutic area, their mechanisms and resolution.
- describe potential drug interactions.

The learning experience is primarily face-to-face, in lectures and tutorial-workshops. You may participate in activities relating to case studies that are used to integrate knowledge across the discipline areas, including the underpinning principles of pharmacology.

Overview of Assessment
Assessment in this course will consist of individual and group assignments. You will be assessed through formal exams and tests. Assessment may also include oral presentations and written assignments or reports
