Course Description

This course covers normal physiological inflammatory, immune and respiratory mechanisms, pathophysiology, and related pharmacology and therapeutics.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

You will undertake a series of lectures, tutorials and workshops to develop a functional understanding of:

  • The anatomy, physiology and pathology of inflammation and the immune and respiratory systems
  • Therapeutic strategies for the treatment of inflammation and the immune and respiratory systems
  • The pharamacology of drugs used to treat inflammation and the immune and respiratory systems
  • The clinical impliacations of drug and other therapies for treatment of inflammation and the immune and respiratory systems


Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe the anatomy, physiology and pathology involving inflammation and the immune and respiratory systems.
  • Discuss basic diagnosis and therapeutic indications for diseases involving inflammation, the immune and respiratory systems.
  • Describe the mechanism of action of the various agents used in the treatment of diseases involving inflammation, the immune and respiratory systems.
  • Predict and explain the likely adverse events for drugs used in the treatment diseases involving inflammation, the immune and respiratory disease, their mechanisms and resolution.
  • Predict and explain potential drug interactions, their various mechanisms, and how this would impact clinical practice in this therapeutic area.

The learning experience is face-to-face, in lectures, tutorials and workshops. Case studies and presentations are used to integrate knowledge across discipline areas (anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology and therapeutics).

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed through tests during the semester and an end-of-semester exam. Other assessment tasks may include assignments, presentations and case scenario performance.
