Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Completion of structural design and analysis courses in a B.Eng program or demonstration of equivalent capability.

Course Description

In this course you will be introduced to structural strengthening and repair techniques including both conventional techniques such as steel plate bonding, external post tensioning, section encasement and enhancement, as well as new innovative techniques such as fibre reinforced polymer composites and polymer infusion. You will have the opportunity to apply strengthening techniques on a selected case study.

Furthermore, you will be able to evaluate the structural response characteristics based on design decisions; you will be trained to identify failure mechanism and design defects, and to evaluate appropriateness of strengthening measures. You will become familiar with different analysis methods, techniques and tools of vulnerability and retrofit assessment.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This Course contributes to the development of the following Program Learning Outcomes

  • Apply the mechanics of materials in nonlinear post elastic behaviour for reliable structural systems design and resilient response under extreme events.
  • Identify, diagnose and treat complex problems in relation to whole-of-life reliability and resilient performance during occupancy

On successful completion of the course, you will be able to:

  1. Classify typical building type, assess structural vulnerability, evaluate damage to structures, identify rehabilitation strategies and reconstruction techniques.
  2. Understand the strengthening needs of a given element of a structural system based on signs of distress and capacity assessment.
  3. Research and investigate recent developments in strengthening of deteriorated structures
  4. Identify and analyse a range of strengthening techniques suitable for specific structural elements and materials
  5. Design a strengthening scheme for structural elements using new and established strengthening techniques for concrete, steel and timber structures.
  6. Assess the long term performance of the strengthening design solution.

Overview of Learning Activities

A modular blended learning model comprising lecture/workshop sessions, on-line forums and team based activities will be employed in the course.

Students will be working on selected case studies of structural strengthening and will apply the theoretical concepts introduced during class sessions to these.

You will engage in on-line forums to share information and participate in case studies.

Overview of Learning Resources

Learning resources required will include relevant Australian, ACI and FIB standards and user guides developed for structural strengthening.

Overview of Assessment

X This course has no hurdle requirements

Assignments will involve structural condition assessment and designing structural strengthening systems for selected case studies.

The assignments will assess the skills learned to assess condition and analyse and design strengthened structures - LO 1-5.

Assessment tasks

Assignment 1
Structural Appraisal Report 30%

Assignment 2
Structural Repair and strengthening 35%

Assignment 3
Structural Repair and strengthening - column axial strengthening 35%
