Course Description

This course will prepare you to teach Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability, two of the content strands in the school curriculum. There is a strong emphasis on extending your knowledge and confidence in the mathematics that underpins school curricula at this level. Modelling a conceptually-rich, strategy-driven approach, you will critically analyse research findings into how students learn and develop strategies to teach for understanding. You will investigate how to use resources effectively and innovatively when planning sequence of learning activities that support the development of mathematical reasoning in the content areas addressed.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Critically analyse and apply educational research to your professional practice, demonstrating inclusive, learner focused, evidence-based teaching.
  • Consolidate and synthesise expert content and pedagogical knowledge and judgement to develop highly effective and innovative teaching skills in an area of specialisation.
  • Demonstrate a capacity for critically reflective practice including social, environmental and cultural professional awareness in both local and global contexts.
  • Communicate and engage professionally and ethically with students, colleagues, parents, carers and education stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
  • Show commitment to ongoing professional learning, particularly in relation to meeting the Australian Graduate Standards for Teachers

Objectives/Learni Outcomes/Cap lity Developme

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

Overview of Learning Activities

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities including lectures, tutorials, workshops, informal study groups, on-line discussions, reflection on children’s mathematics learning, the preparation of teaching materials, and readings to support the development of the learning outcomes of this course.

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems. A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. There are 3 assessment tasks:

Title, Words, Weighting
