Course Description

This course will provide you with an introduction to principles, key (theoretical and practical) elements and appropriate knowledge and skills in the fields of Visual Arts and Music. Performing Arts (Music) focuses on developing students’ confidence in music and includes musical composition, performance, improvisation and movement, active listening within broad social and cultural contexts. Visual Arts scaffolds students’ conceptual and technical skill development in art practice and promotes understanding of basic Visual Arts elements and an appreciation of artworks within broad social and cultural contexts.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Your learning in this course is focused on development of the following program level capabilities:

  • Develop and apply theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to your professional practice and development of curriculum, pedagogy and assessment.
  • Demonstrate creativity, critical thinking and innovation when identifying and solving problems in diverse educational contexts.
  • Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness and ethical and reflective practice.
  • Apply initiative and judgment in planning, problem solving and decision making to enhance your practice and continuing professional development.

At the conclusion of this course you will be assessed on the following learning outcomes:

  • Identify and describe key elements in both Visual Arts and Music
  • Explore and experiment with techniques and personal expression in Visual Arts and Music
  • Identify and apply best practices in the Arts
  • Evaluate and use ICT in the Arts.

Overview of Learning Activities

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities. These will be based around hands-on collaborative learning and teaching workshops in arts skills and knowledge and best practice Arts pedagogies.

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems. A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning and specific to your own particular arts project/s, and to engage live with works of art and arts performances.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.

Assessment may include reports, folios, artworks, performances, projects and presentations, individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
