Course Description

In this capstone course, which is an experience designed as a culmination of your learning throughout the program, you will engage in a self-directed digital media production in which you will develop a major creative work. Focusing on your specialisation you will integrate research, theory and practice to conceptualise and develop an idea-led design into its final form.

This is a designated Work Integrated Learning (WIL) course for BP309/BP309VNI Bachelor of Design (Digital Media). This course will integrate work-based learning and academic learning, commonly referred to as Work Integrated learning (WIL), and will allow you to solve authentic industry problems or address real issues faced in organisations.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

You will be assessed on your development against the following Program Learning Outcomes:   • Acquire knowledge of visual literacy and design theory, interactive and motion design, moving image, communications technologies, and digital media production skills and their application to digitally mediated communication.  • Apply theoretical knowledge, conceptual skills and production techniques to the development of digital media solutions for communications problems.  • Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on the role, application and implications of digital media works in both local and international contexts. • Demonstrate creativity, critical thinking and innovation when identifying and solving problems in divers contexts within the discipline. • Communicate using diverse formats and strategies to audiences within and external to your discipline. • Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness and ethical and reflective practice.  • Apply initiative and judgement in planning, problem solving and decision making in your practice or future study. • Apply a body of theoretical and practical knowledge and specific skills in media and communication, in which to base your professional practice or future study.

 


Upon the successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Research, conceptualise, plan and execute major creative work in your area of specialisation in digital media, working individually or within teams as required.
  2. Present your work to diverse stakeholders and effectively communicate its underlying concepts.
  3. Investigate and apply appropriate technology to resolve design problems in your area of specialisation.
  4. Critically reflect on how digital media theoretical perspectives align with and are embedded in global industry practice.
  5. Critically discuss current and future trends in the digital media industry.

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of face-to-face activities such as studios, workshops, group and class discussion and individual research.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Assessment may include projects, assignments, critiques, reports and presentations, individually and/or in groups.

Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.

Project Proposal, 10% - This will be an presentation of the project idea that will be  developed over the semester. You should discuss the concept and rational, including a timeline with milestones.

Development and Review, 30% - Demonstrate the ideas that have been researched and developed.  Highlight your progress towards completion of the project, with an emphasis on demonstrating working prototypes when possible.  Discuss any issues that may effect scope or feasibility of work to be done, modification to timeline, and outcomes of the project.

Project Delivery, 40% - For this milestone you will give a presentation of the completed project, emphasizing how the final work answers the project brief and/or concept as it has developed throughout the term.

Critical Analysis and Reflection, 20% - You will reflect on the process of development and delivery, the team dynamic if applicable, and your individual role. This is an individual assignment and will be assessed as such.
