Course Description

Local and international perspectives and issues in contemporary digital media practice will be a focus of the course. Studios will provide an opportunity through presentations, iterations and discussions to demonstrate your ability to communicate your ideas professionally.

The Studio format gives you the opportunity to explore thematic/cultural/professional design issues in depth through a variety of approaches. You will explore concepts, techniques and modes of communication through the creation of animated linear or interactive productions that respond to a series of theoretical and technical principles, real and simulated situations and practical constraints. There may also be the opportunity for students from other Studios, within this program or external programs, to work alongside you in a setting that encourages peer-to-peer learning through shared experience.

This is the designated Work Integrated Learning (WIL) course for MC232 Master of Animation, Games and Interactivity and GD193 Graduate Diploma of Animation, Games and Interactivity. This course includes a work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your experience.

In this course you may have the option to undertake a placement. An agreement including schedule and relevant insurance documentation is required to be completed before commencing each placement (local and international). International placements must be registered and processed through RMIT Global Mobility. In the case where a placement ends early, please refer to Changes or cancellation of WIL activities in the WIL Guideline.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

You will be assessed on your development against the following Program Learning Outcomes:

• Articulate and apply significant knowledge of narrative, visual and interactive media through contemporary studio forms, systems and devices. • Apply professional skills and self determination to realise relevant solutions in motion, game and interaction design that are effective and flexible. • Critically reflect on your work to demonstrate autonomy, good judgment and ethical responsibility. • Undertake research into contemporary media and communication theory and practice to explore possible industry and career directions.

Upon the successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Select and critically apply professional technical skills and knowledge in a chosen area of the animation, games and interactive field to create substantive works.
  2. Critically analyse the thematic, cultural and technical context of briefs to design appropriate solutions.
  3. Communicate concepts, cultural and thematic contexts and production details to clients, stakeholders and production team members.
  4. Design, develop and complete substantial projects, using contextualised briefs, within the established scope of time and resources.
  5. Investigate, evaluate and apply current industry practices to the realisation of substantial projects.
  6. Reflect on project outcomes in relation to briefs.

Overview of Learning Activities

This course engages you in learning about Animation, Games and Interactivity via an immersion into the field, its methods and practices through set projects. These projects involve a range of planned learning experiences in the Studio environment including: individual and group problem solving; idea generation and the iterative development of animated linear, game or interactive concepts; using preproduction methodologies for the purpose of further refining propositions; and presenting and reflecting on individual and collective learning processes.

This will include the iterative development from concept through to animated linear, game or interactive productions and the development of a practice of documenting ideas. Learning activities include workshops, group work, independent inquiry and critique.

In this Studio you will experiment with ideas in your chosen area of specialisation using a variety of tools and techniques. You will work in small project teams, in a real or simulated industrial context, to complete a range of activities that may be self generated or proposed by clients.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the cours learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

This course has the following three assessment tasks:

• Assignment 1 (15%)    Community of Practice: Engagement    Linked to course learning outcomes 3 and 6.

• Assignment 2 (35%)    Folio 01: Minor Project Development    Linked to course learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.

• Assignment 3 (50%)    Folio 02: Minor Project Completion    Linked to course learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Briefs and assessment rubrics for all assessment tasks will be made available in Canvas at the commencement of the course.
Students are expected to attend and contribute to class, including providing peer review and peer learning.

Oral feedback on assessment tasks will be provided in class and written feedback via the grading rubric.
