Course Description

This course covers the different aspects involved in aircraft and aeronautical program certification. The different regulatory requirements in civil and military aviation are examined. Particular focus is given on the certification regulatory requirements, such as:

• Aircraft and aeronautical product certification standards
• Operational and environmental requirements
• Design approval and control
• Type certification of aircraft and aeronautical products
• Acceptable means of compliance
• Design changes and modifications

 This course contributes to the development of the following program learning outcomes (PLOs):

1. Needs, Context and Systems
• Exposit legal, social, economic, ethical and environmental interests, values, requirements and expectations of key stakeholders
• Identify and assess risks (including OH&S) as well as the economic, social and environmental impacts of engineering activities

• Anticipate the consequences of intended action or inaction and understand how the consequences are managed collectively by your organisation, project or team

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Critically discuss the key concepts and practices of aircraft certification.
  2. Determine and critically evaluate complex issues relating to aircraft certification.
  3. Plan and apply the aircraft certification process.
     


Overview of Learning Activities

The learning process is reinforced through problem-based learning using real aircraft case studies. Pre-recorded lectures or distance delivery together with practical projects and assignments will be the major learning model.


Overview of Learning Resources

Learning resources will consist of recommended references and class notes which may be accessed through "myRMIT" if you are in Melbourne and via "RMIT online" if you are based in Vietnam.
The set of references is deliberately broad, including books, journal publications, government reports, industry standards and handbooks, and web-based resources.
