Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
You should have satisfactorily completed the prerequisite course BUIL1226 Introduction to Buildings before you commence this course.
OR
Alternatively you may be able to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge before you start this course. Contact your course coordinator if you think you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning. Further information: http://www.rmit.edu.au/browse;ID=x94or0ccuu7k
Course Description
This course focuses on the management of buildings and how building services optimise building performance. Topics covered include the building life cycle, space planning, building design, energy management, fire safety, and the operation and management of services.
Through your learning in this course you will apply theory to practice to better understand the facility management of buildings. You will examine business and environment changes and how the facility supports these changes, critically engaging in problem based industry scenarios. You will integrate and apply your developed understanding of building systems to ensure building performance is optimised. Further, you will develop the skills and knowledge required to think critically about the provision of space within a building to achieve the maximum space utilisation and identify the building services required within any commercial building.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)
In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
1 Determine and apply knowledge of complex property and valuation theory to your professional practice and/or further study
2 Professionally communicate to a range of audiences, demonstrating in depth knowledge of the discipline and of the needs of diverse property and valuation stakeholders
3 Apply logical, critical and creative thinking to analyse, synthesise and apply theoretical knowledge, and technical skills, to formulate evidenced based solutions to industry problems or issues
5 Collaborate effectively with others and demonstrate intellectual independence and autonomy to solve problems and/or address industry issues and imperatives
Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- Analyse and interpret building drawings
- Explain how energy systems are supplied and managed in buildings
- Identify building systems and determine how to effectively manage these systems
- Design spaces which maximise building efficiency and marketability
- Identify building life cycles and formulate solutions to address building services requirements
- Analyse and communicate how building services control the indoor environment.
Overview of Learning Activities
This course will engage you in a range of learning activities including lectures, workshops, on line quizzes, software demonstrations, analysis of readings and problem solving. These techniques will enhance you learning and understanding of facility management.
Overview of Learning Resources
RMIT will provide you with the resources and tools for learning in this course through our on linds systems. You will be expected to utilise library and electronic resources (as well as other appropriate resources) to engage in professional reading of relevant literature in strategic facility management. The learning resources used in this course may include: lecture overheads, workshop activity sheets, recommended texts, revision quizzes for each topic.
Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment consists of a mid-semester test and two major assignments:
Task 1: Mid-semester test (40% weighting) CLOs 1, 2, 4 & 5.
The mid-semester test will be conducted in class. The exam is a CLOSED BOOK examination. It will include multiple choice questions, short answer questions and essay questions.
Task 2: Individual assignment (20% weighting) CLOs 3, 4, & 5.
This assessment task requires students to understand both Australian and international sustainability rating systems that can help to manage energy efficient buildings and achieve sustainability in facility management.
Task 3: Group assignment (40% weighting) CLOs 2, 3, 5, & 6.
This assessment task requires students to research current building design and operation strategies to achieve energy efficiency and sustainability and to select relevant strategies that can be applicable to the proposed project.
Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
Equitable Learning Services
Equitable Learning Services (ELS) provide support and equal opportunities for students with a disability, long-term illness and/or mental health condition and primary carers of individuals with a disability. You can contact the ELS if you would like to find out more: https://www.rmit.edu.au/students/support-and-facilities/student-support/equitable-learning-services. You can also contact the course coordinator or the program coordinator if you would like to find out more.
An assessment charter (http://mams.rmit.edu.au/kh6a3ly2wi2h1.pdf) summarises your responsibilities as an RMIT student as well as those of your teaching staff.
Your course assessment conforms to RMIT assessment principles, regulations, policies and procedures which are described and referenced in a single document: http://www.rmit.edu.au/browse;ID=ln1kd66y87rc.
