Course Description
This course will introduce you to key aspects of management and leadership in a construction environment. The objectives of this course are to develop your understanding of general management theories and their application in the construction industry. You will also develop your knowledge of organisational structure, leadership approaches and team dynamics and supply chain management.
Topics covered in the course include:
• An introduction to management theories
• The Australian Construction Context
• Organizational Structure and the contemporary workplace
• Contemporary issues: ethical behaviour and social responsibility; organisational environment and diversity
• Leading and managing change
• Procurement and project teams
• Communication and interpersonal skills
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)
In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes
- PLO1: Determine and apply complex knowledge of construction management theory to your professional practice and/or further study
- PLO2: Professionally communicate to a range of audiences utilising diverse formats and strategies, demonstrating in depth knowledge of the discipline and responsiveness to the needs of diverse construction management stakeholders
- PLO3: Apply logical, critical and creative thinking to analyse, synthesise and apply theoretical knowledge, and technical skills, to formulate evidenced based solutions to industry problems or issues
- PLO5: Collaborate effectively with others and demonstrate intellectual independence and autonomy to solve problems and/or address industry issues and imperatives
Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to
- CLO1: Analyse management concepts and theories to determine the effectiveness of management of construction projects
- CLO2: Determine how management leadership strategies enable organisational change
- CLO3: Critically examine and assess how project team work and supply chain integration contribute to successful project delivery
- CLO4: Critically reflect on the ethical and social implications of leadership strategy and decision making
- CLO5: Formulate and apply appropriate management solutions to address leadership and management scenarios and issues

This course will be delivered through lectorials. You will engage in a range of interactive learning activities which include discussions, debates, case study analysis, quizzes, and problem solving exercises.
