Course Description

Leading through design

In this course you will explore contemporary strategies and approaches to design leadership; from management practices to questions about what it is to be a leader in design, or to lead through design. You will learn communication and personal skills that support creative and adaptive leadership in professional design practice.

The course focuses on real world case studies as examples of how designers use artifacts and processes to create change and harness transdisciplinary collaboration in a variety of contemporary design contexts.

Program Learning Outcomes

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Apply advanced design skills to engage stakeholders, frame ill-defined problems, and create innovative solutions.
  • Determine and apply the specialist knowledge and technical skills required to creatively solve problems, demonstrating expert judgement and ethical responsibility relating to your professional practice and discipline.
  • Provide leadership within your discipline as well as collaborate with others. 


Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate a variety of perspectives, which influence leadership approaches in your field.
  2. Apply established theories and concepts from fields related to organisational strategy to your design practice.
  3. Develop and apply creative communication skills required to successfully lead design projects.
  4. Articulate and apply extensive knowledge of how design supports leadership and team activities.

You will be actively engaged in learning that involves a range of online activities such as studios, project work, lectures, tutorials, discussion, individual and group activities.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment may include presentations, projects and may be done individually and in teams.
