Course Description
This course will provide you with an introduction to the people, practices and scholarship of the global music industries. In addressing various issues, trends, and cultural and social contexts, this course will lay a foundation for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in your degree. Most importantly, it will build your familiarity and awareness of music as both a business and a culture.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
- Employ a body of theoretical knowledge and skills to respond to the multi-skilled and changing nature of music industry practices.
- Analyse and evaluate music practices and theories in local, national and global communities and industry contexts.
- Communicate using diverse formats and strategies to audiences within and external to your discipline.
Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- Investigate a range of theoretical frameworks in relation to the music industries and their practices.
- Discuss various contemporary trends and issues operating within the music industries.
- Identify and analyse some of the key networks of the contemporary global music industries.
- Communicate ideas within a broad range of music-related contexts.
- Analyse the range and impact of different media on the culture and business of music.

You will be actively engaged in learning that involves a range of activities such as studios, project work, lectures, tutorials, class discussion, individual and group activities.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.
Assessment Tasks:

Assessment Task 2: Academic Integrity Cred (Individual) 5% Linked CLOs: 4, 5
Assessment Task 3: Essay (Individual) 30% Linked CLOs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
