Course Description

This course is a practical introduction to the craft of music production and performance. Within this studio, you will have the opportunity to develop skills in sound production, live music performance, concept development, event coordination and promotion. You will work both collaboratively and individually, drawing together your own strategies to confront these challenging and central aspects of music making and the global commercial music industries.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Employ a body of theoretical knowledge and skills to respond to the multi-skilled and changing nature of music industry practices.
  • Analyse and evaluate music practices and theories in local, national and global communities and industry contexts.
  • Apply a body of theoretical and practical knowledge and specific skills in media and communication, particularly in your discipline, in which to base your professional practice or future study.


Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Identify the key concepts relating to music performance.
  2. Analyse theories of music production.
  3. Evaluate the changing nature of music technology in social and cultural context.
  4. Utilise a range of key practical skills that facilitate music industry practices.
  5. Plan and develop practical projects related to real world music industry problems.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment may include essays, reports, reflective papers, creative projects and presentations, individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task 1: Quizzes, 30% (maximum 20% multiple choice), CLO1, CLO2 and CLO3

Assessment Task 2: Research Essay, 20%, CLO1, CLO2 and CLO3

Assessment Task 3: Studio Assessment, 50%, CLO4 and CLO5
