Course Description
In order to successfully deliver energy efficient and sustainable buildings, an advanced understanding of building physics is required. Professionals in the areas of design, engineering and project management all require knowledge of methods for measuring and verifying the sustainability performance of buildings and of the physical processes that determine performance, namely the flows of energy, moisture and air in the built environment.
This course will develop the specialised knowledge and skills required to analyse and apply the scientific and engineering principles of heat and mass transfer in the Built Environment. You will acquire the skills and knowledge required to perform calculations of air, moisture and energy flows in buildings, and apply these skills to develop building design strategies and to undertake energy audits.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)
In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
- Analyse, synthesise and apply sustainable building theory and principles to address industry issues, and implement new directions in sustainable building design
- Professionally communicate your ideas and strategies, justifying decisions to diverse stakeholders, including government and industry stakeholders
- Employ your knowledge of sustainable building and performance theory, and leading technologies, to develop solutions that respond to the diverse needs of sustainable building project stakeholders
- Critically examine sustainable building theory, to question accepted building solutions, design strategies, design practices and decision making approaches
- Apply appropriate research methods, tools and technical skills to plan and/or evaluate projects that contribute to the profession and the field of knowledge in the discipline
Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Determine and discuss the physical basis for the sustainability performance of buildings, applying knowledge of energy, moisture and airflow and the role of occupant behaviour
- Synthesise and apply the principles of building physics to evaluate the energy and environmental performance of energy efficient and sustainable buildings
- Research and analyse design strategies for achieving sustainability design objectives based on scientific and objective decision-based performance criteria
- Plan and execute energy audits and complex scientific evaluations of building energy and environmental performance
- Perform calculations to estimate the heating, cooling and power loads of buildings
Overview of Learning Activities
This course will engage you in experiential and active learning. You will engage in a range of learning activities delivered face-to-face. The course consists of a series of lectures, seminars, workshops and fieldwork. In the seminar sessions, you will engage in hands-on interactive class activities, scenario-based learning, group discussions and hands-on computer-based workshops.
Overview of Learning Resources
RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.
As part of the learning in this course you will be directed to lecture notes and other related information through links in MyRMIT. Resources you will utlise in this course include lecture notes, case studies, software packages and library resources.
There are services available to support your learning through the University Library. The Library provides guides on academic referencing and subject specialist help as well as a range of study support services. For further information, please visit the Library page on the RMIT University website and the myRMIT student portal.
Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment consists of:
Task 1: Individual. Home thermal comfort assessment. Total weighting 20%. CLO1, CLO2, CLO3
Task 2: Individual. Assessment of thermal behaviour of buildings. Total weighting 35%. CLO1, CLO2, CLO3, CLO5
Task 3: Individual. Building energy audit. Total weighting 45%. CLO1, CLO2, CLO3, CLO4, CLO5
Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
Equitable Learning Services
If you have a long term medical condition and/or disability or if you are a primary carer of a person with disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the program coordinator or Equitable Learning Services if you would like to find out more.
Your course assessment conforms to RMIT assessment principles, regulations, policies, procedures and instructions.
