Course Description

In this course you will learn to create media, individually and collaboratively, and to situate and evaluate your work in relation to contemporary industry and academic contexts. You will also be introduced to the practices and values that inform a studio-based learning model.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Initiate, produce and evaluate media projects and be able to adapt your practice in a complex and changing world.
  • Reflect upon, direct and evaluate your own learning.
  • Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness and ethical and reflective practice.


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Critically analyse and evaluate your own learning styles.
  • Possess basic skills in the operation of a range of media authoring technologies.
  • Reflect upon and explain your creative choices in individual and group contexts.
  • Research, propose and produce a range of media.


Overview of Learning Activities

Your learning is enabled through problem-based tasks that require you to make media that respond to prompts generated by current debates and research within media studies and industries.

You will be actively engaged in learning that involves a range of activities such as project work, lectures, tutorials, class discussion, individual and group activities.


Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.

A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.

Extensive use of resources from the School of Media & Communication Technical Store, radio edit suites, video edit suites and the computer labs are required. Security swipe card access is required to access these spaces. The broader resources of the library and the AFI Research Collection will also be valuable for students in this course.
