Additional rules apply to this course. They are:

 

  1. You must enrol in the Contemporary Business Issues course with CPA Australia and provide a copy of the enrolment confirmation via the online form before you will be permitted to enrol in this course. When this is received, admissions will activate the online enrolment function.
  2. The Contemporary Business Issues examination is a hurdle assessment for this course and you must successfully complete the examination in addition to achieving 50 percent or more for all assessment results combined to successfully complete the course. All six CPA examinations listed in the RMIT program structure must be passed as a condition for the award of the degree – MC260 Master of Professional Accounting (CPA Australia Extension)
  3. If you fail the Contemporary Business Issues examination, you must re-enrol in the failed Contemporary Business Issues course with CPA Australia and provide a copy of your enrolment confirmation to MPA.CPA@rmit.edu.au. Once enrolment confirmation is received, your grade for the RMIT CPA Contemporary Business Issues course will be changed from Fail (NH) to Supplementary Exam state (SUP). You must re-sit the Contemporary Business Issues examination in the next CPA examination session. Failure to advise the University of your re-enrolment in the Contemporary Business Issues course with CPA Australia by 29 July 2019 will result in a Fail (NH) for the RMIT course.
  4. If you pass the Contemporary Business Issues examination in the next examination sitting, you will be awarded a Supplementary Pass (SP) for this course. If you fail the Contemporary Business Issues examination in your second attempt, you will be awarded a Fail (NH) for the course and have the following options:
    1. Re-enrol in the course with RMIT and CPA Australia in the next semester and complete all assessment tasks (confirmation of enrolment with CPA Australia required); or
    2. Apply for a program change into the MC194 Master of Professional Accounting
  5. If you defer your Contemporary Business Issues examination, you must submit a copy of your deferral approval from CPA Australia to MPA.CPA@rmit.edu.au. In this instance, you will be graded SUP for the semester and you must complete the Contemporary Business Issues examination at the next immediate offering. If you successfully complete the examination, you will receive a Supplementary Pass (SP) grade for the RMIT CPA Contemporary Business Issues course. If you do not provide a copy of the approval from CPA Australia, you will receive a Fail (NH) grade for the RMIT course and your options are outlined in point 4 above.

Course Description

This is a core course in the Master of Professional Accounting (CPA Australia Extension) degree. You will examine a number of contemporary and emerging global issues in order to familiarise you with the business environment you are likely to be operating in as an accountant. It also uses Contemporary Business Issues as a vehicle for advancing the development of professional values, ethics and attitudes. This course integrates the materials from the CPA Program Professional Level segment titled ‘Strategic Management Accounting’ and prepares you for the CPA examination.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. analyse and evaluate the development of professional values, ethics and attitudes by using complex, real-life scenarios that highlight how professional values, ethics and attitudes underpin all facets of an accountant’s work
  2. justify and interpret the origins and effects of contemporary and emerging global issues that are affecting the business environment
  3. apply an attitude of professional curiosity by challenging assumptions about contemporary and emerging issues and how they should be addressed
  4. critically evaluate current research and practice on the origins and effects of contemporary and emerging global issues
  5. judge the effects that disclosure requirements will have on financial and non-financial reporting, and consider the overall impact that a shift towards non-financial, sustainability and integrated reporting will have on enterprises and accounting functions


Overview of Learning Activities

Learning activities include: face to face workshops, use of online materials and resources, debates, case studies, applied research on current issues, guest speakers and completion of weekly work.

In this course you will be encouraged to be an active learner. Your learning will be supported through various in-class and online activities comprising individual and group work. These may include quizzes; assignments; prescribed readings; sourcing, researching and analysing specific information; solving problems; conducting presentations; producing written work and collaborating with peers on set tasks or projects.

Various learning resources are available online through myRMIT/Canvas. In addition to topic notes; assessment details and a study schedule you may also be provided with links to relevant online information; readings; audio and video clips and communication tools to facilitate collaboration with your peers and to share information.
