Course Description

This course explains key aspects of Australian employment law, including the analysis of common law principles applying the employer-employee relationship, as well as the statutory provisions governing employment.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Successful completion of Employment Law means that students should be able to: 

CLO1 Understand the history and evolution of employment law in Australia.

CLO2 Understand key aspects of the relevant legislation and relevant case law.

CLO3 Apply the key legal rules associated with a range of employment law issues.

CLO4 Read and comprehend legislation.

CLO5 Read and comprehend relevant common law.

CLO6 Identify and critically analyse legal and associated issues in the context of relevant legislation and common law.

CLO7 Express that analysis in writing in a precise manner.

CLO8 Problem solve, involving the application of knowledge to current legal issues.


Overview of Learning Activities

Learning activities are designed around case-studies and problems that encourage critical discussion during seminars.

Students will be required to prepare answers to discussion questions every week before they come to seminars. This enables them to fully participate in class discussions.
