Course Description

In this course you will examine concepts surrounding health promotion and health education in the context of primary health care. Concepts of trauma informed practice and responding to mental health presentations of adults and young children will also be explored. Key parenting concerns for the 0-6 year age group such as infant mental health, play and behaviour will be examined from an evidence based perspective. Throughout the course the focus will be on working in partnership with families.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the development of the following Program Learning Outcomes:

  • PLO 1: Critically examine the principles of primary health care to plan, implement and evaluate health promotion activities within child, family and community health practice.
  • PLO 3: Critically evaluate contemporary research findings and integrate these to provide comprehensive, safe and effective evidence based health care for children, families and the community.
  • PLO 5: Conduct individual and family consultations and group sessions in a planned, systematic, professional and timely manner, providing feedback to families and engaging them in decision making regarding their own care.
  • PLO 6: Communicate effectively with children, families and groups to engage and support clients, working in partnership with families and interdisciplinary health teams to promote assess and support maternal, child and family health and wellbeing.


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Critically examine health promotion in the context of primary health care and review key health promotion issues in child, family and community health.
  2. Critically appraise the strengths based framework of trauma informed practice and its application to individuals and families in the maternal and child health setting.
  3. Evaluate the current evidence base related to infant mental health and integrate this into Maternal and Child Health (MCH) practice and early parenting support.
  4. Identify and respond to common presentations of mental health issues in adults and preschool children in a community setting.
  5. Identify common (key) parenting concerns for parents and children aged 0-6 years, appraise the evidence base around each and work in partnership with parents to address their concerns, discuss options and plan management strategies.


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.
