Course Description

Understanding business operations assists executive managers to manage local and international business operations as an executive in an internationally competitive setting. In this course you will draw upon your executive experience to explore design thinking when engaging with business operation problems and opportunities.

Through this course you will learn how to effectively listen, negotiate and create value for business stakeholders. You will learn of research principles and methods to develop ethical and sustainable solutions for problems and issues in contemporary business operations practice.

You will be introduced to key business operations concepts and major functions through a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) project or business simulation in which either as individuals or as a competitive ‘company’, you will undertake the functional roles of business operations managers. You will be required to present in Collaborative Learning Network (CLN) teams to an industry panel prior to and after completion of the work integrated learning project or business simulation, indicating your strategy, objectives, and recommendations.

This course includes a WIL experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real work integrated learning project or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your experience.

On the successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

1. Create a set of client focussed business operations options to create value for business stakeholders.
2. Use design thinking when exploring business operation problems and opportunities.
3. Effectively listen to, negotiate with and lead discussions with business stakeholders.
4. Apply research principles and methods to develop ethical and sustainable solutions for problems and issues in contemporary business operations practice.

Overview of Learning Activities

This course will provide you with the opportunity to engage in small group work discussions. The course includes a business operations simulation. You will also undertake a selection of Harvard business and other case studies, and hear guest speakers from a range of industries.

In addition to topic notes; assessment details and a study schedule you may also be provided with links to relevant online information; readings; audio and video clips and communication tools to facilitate collaboration with your peers and to share information.
