Please be aware that this course forms part of AD006 (Associate Degree in Information Technology) and is not part of the BP162 (Bachelor of Information Technology) study plan. Also, it will follow the Vocational Education calendar dates and not the Higher Ed semester dates which means that classes will start 3 weeks earlier. The timetable is published under the Vocational Education timetable link and is not available on STS. If you enrol in this course as an elective please check with your program coordinator before commencement as this is not a bachelor course.

Course Description

This course introduces an approach to developing user interfaces for interactive systems such as software or web applications, with regard to the requirements of the client and the experience of the users. You will learn to analyse user needs and design, implement and evaluate various solutions to meet those needs.

You will learn to use web-based tools for information gathering and analysis, appropriate design software, and to implement prototypes for evaluation using basic programming where appropriate. This course serves as an introduction to later courses in web and application development.

On completion of this course you should be able to:

1. Explore and analyse users’ needs, usability goals and user experience goals of a small-to-medium-sized web/software application

2. Use software and relevant other prototyping tools to design user interfaces that take into account human capabilities and constraints, users’ needs, usability goals and user experience goals

3. Critically evaluate the usability of a small-to-medium-sized web or software application

Overview of Learning Activities

You will engage in workshop style classes in PC labs, including short lectures, practice exercises, case studies, discussions and assignments. Online resources and discussion forums will be available.
Assignments will include team work to develop and evaluate user interfaces. Responding appropriately to peer review of your interface designs is part of your assessment.

Notes, videos and exercise material will be provided online via myRMIT also known as CANVAS. You will be using the Google suite of tools extensively in this course. Additional materials are available to RMIT students through the training library and Safari Bookshelf, as well as the RMIT Library.
