Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
This is an Honours course. You should be a student in BH131 Bachelor of Social Science (Honours) to be enrolled in this course.
Recommended Concurrent or Prior Study
You should have satisfactorily completed, or be currently undertaking, HUSO1222: Designing Social Science Research and HUSO2451: Social Science Research Methods for Honours, as they contain areas of knowledge and skills which are implemented together in practice.
Alternatively, you may be able to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge before you start this course.
Contact the Program Manager if you think you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning.
Course Description
This is the first of two courses that will culminate in the development of your Social Science Honours Project/Thesis, which is the major research task undertaken during your Honours year.
In this course, you will work with your supervisor (or supervisory team) to refine and develop your research, drawing upon materials from your other courses (HUSO1222: Designing Social Science Research and HUSO2451: Social Science Research Methods for Honours).
If you are enrolled in this course as a component of your Bachelor Honours Program, your overall mark will contribute to the calculation of the weighted average mark (WAM).
See the WAM information web page for more information.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Program Learning Outcomes

PLO1: Apply creative, critical, and innovative thinking, along with reflective practice, to effectively identify and analyse diverse social science challenges.
PLO2: Critique, reflect on and synthesise knowledge, experiences and information from a range of sources to enhance understanding and application in social science research.
PLO4: Employ social science research methods to independently design, conduct, and defend research with a well-constructed argument.
Course Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course you will be able to:
CLO1: Demonstrate thorough and extensive knowledge of the discipline area and contemporary literature relevant to your research topic,
CLO2: Plan, design and conduct a substantive independent research project,
CLO3: Develop and sustain a substantial argument over the length of your project/thesis,
CLO4: Demonstrate the use of critical and cogent analysis skills.
Overview of Learning Activities
Learning in this course will incorporate the following activities:
- Research project planning and design;
- Data collection and analysis
- Thesis drafting; and
- Preparation, presentation and editing of thesis text.
You will actively engage in these learning activities independently under the supervision of an expert (or experts) in your field of research.
Overview of Learning Resources
In this course you will be expected to identify your own resources relevant to the focus of your research topic.
RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.
A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your course coordinator, including books, journal articles and/or web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own research.
There are services and resources available to support your learning through the University Library. The Library provides guides on academic referencing and subject specialist help as well as a range of study support services.
Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.
Assessment Task: Progression Toward Research Project or Thesis
Weighting: 100%
Addressing course learning outcomes: 1-4
Based upon the academic judgement of your supervisor that you have achieved adequate progress toward your project/thesis, an interim grade of NEX will be applied at the conclusion of the semester in which you study this course.
This grade indicates that no assessment is scheduled at this time. This reflects the final and summative examination process that your final project/thesis will undertake at the end of second semester. At that time, this result will mirror the result allocated to your final project/thesis submission.
There will be one formal assessment task to be submitted during semester two in HUSO2375: Honours Thesis Part B. This will be a research-based monograph or equivalent of 15,000 – 20,000 words.
Feedback will be given on all aspects of this assessment task.
If you have a long term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the program coordinator or Equitable Learning Services if you would like to find out more.
Your course assessment conforms to RMIT assessment principles, regulations, policies, procedures and instructions.
