Course Description

This course aims to introduce you to basic digital media technologies in a global context. It introduces you to integrating text, sound, and images using industry standard computer software within a single digital information environment. You will learn basic authoring, characteristics of various multimedia elements and presentation options.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Describe the principles associated with the integration of various multimedia elements.
  2. Outline the major types of commercial authoring software that are used in the design industries for the completion of design projects.
  3. Describe the impact that multimedia technologies have had on a historical, cultural and global lifestyle.
  4. Explain the essential attributes of computer-based design.

Overview of Learning Activities

Project work will incrementally build on knowledge gained from earlier projects so that as they increase in complexity, they also help you to reinforce knowledge introduced in earlier projects.

Classes will include tutorials, demonstrations and lectures on using design software to complete design tasks, historical context and cultural awareness through the use of digital media.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on the above learning outcomes. Assessment is ongoing throughout the semester and you will receive feedback from your teacher and peers. Assessment tasks will include:

  1. Collage design project – 20% (LO 2 & 3)
  2. Animation project 1 – 30% (LO 1 & 3)
  3. Animation project 2 – 40% (LO 5 & 3)
  4. End of semester quiz – 10% (LO 4)
