Course Description

In this course you will be introduced to the theories and practice of sound design for animation. You will explore how audio can be synchronised with time-based media. You will analyse the abstract but powerful ways in which sound can be used to communicate emotive and narrative information and meaning. A focus of the course is application of the principles and practices of sound recording, editing, processing, mixing and synthesis, to design and produce digital audio works and soundtracks, in both local and international contexts.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course addresses the following program learning outcomes:

  • Apply initiative and judgment in planning, problem solving and decision making in professional practice or future study.

  • Demonstrate creativity, critical thinking and innovation when identifying and solving problems in diverse contexts within the discipline.

  • Communicate using diverse formats and strategies to audiences within and external to the discipline.

Upon the successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Critically analyse and evaluate the role of sound in a variety of media.
  2. Use critical listening skills to evaluate your own work and that of others.
  3. Apply theories and techniques of contemporary audio practice to record, synthesise and manipulate audio.
  4. Analyse and respond to creative briefs to produce audio projects that communicate emotive and narrative information and meaning.
  5. Create digital audio compositions and soundtracks, synchronised to linear and interactive visual media.

Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in learning that involves a range of activities such as studios, project work, lectures, tutorials, class discussion, individual and group activities.

The semester will be divided into core concepts pertaining to Animation. Each section will be devoted to a conceptual framework and development of particular skills and creative abilities. Assignments will be given which relate to the skills and knowledge gained in each particular area.

You will develop your abilities in project development relating to animation. You will be encouraged to challenge and develop your creative and critical ability through class activities and individual projects.

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.

A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources that are relevant to the focus of your own learning.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Each assessment task addresses learning outcomes 1-5.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment 1: Storytelling using Sound: 25%
Assessment 2: Soundtrack Creation using Multi-layering: 25%
Assessment 3: Storytelling with Intricate Sound Design: 50%

Details of each assessment task (an assignment brief) will be available in the online platforms used by this course.

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
