Course Description
This course gives you the opportunity to formalise and obtain academic recognition for development work done as part of either of RMIT’s Formula SAE teams (RMIT Racing or RMIT Electric Racing). The work is undertaken under joint supervision and/or assessment (university and industry), and simulates the environment of a professional engineering office. Typical roles within the project team include system analysis, engineering design, manufacture testing and evaluation, though the team also requires a broad range of supporting roles including industrial and graphic design, marketing and sponsorship, and project management. Work recognised as part of this course will contribute directly to the Formula SAE team. Topics of work may either stem from existing work conducted as part of the Formula SAE team or from a developed list of available projects.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following program learning outcomes of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours):
- Application of systematic approaches to the conduct and management of engineering projects
- Ethical conduct and professional accountability
- Effective oral and written communication in professional and lay domains
- Orderly management of self, and professional conduct
- Effective team membership and team leadership
Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of the course, you should be able to:
- Analyse typical issues and challenges of the chosen engineering project
- Demonstrate the ability to be a successful member of a design team and to produce a design outcome at the level expected of a practising professional engineer
- Demonstrate and use reflection as an evaluation and quality improvement tool to foster professional-level communication skills
Overview of Learning Activities
Your supervised work will help you develop critical professional skills. While most of your time will be un-supervised, your supervisors will provide constructive criticism and guidance at key times. Your work will be tailored towards your role within the team, and the expectation of contributions to the project from that role.
Overview of Learning Resources
You will access many learning resources in the library, from industry sources and elsewhere during the course of the project. Your supervisor will be available at agreed times, but, if possible, will consult with you only at times critical to the progress in, and direction of, the project.
Overview of Assessment
This course has no hurdle requirements.
