There are no pre-requisites for enrollment in this course. It is assumed you will be an international student commencing your studies on campus or preparing to undertake an industry placement opportunity in Vietnam.
Course Description
Culture and Context in Vietnam is a multidisciplinary course that will provide you with an opportunity to develop your intercultural skills and competences while learning about and experiencing firsthand life in Vietnamese society. The course provides you with exposure to historical, social and cultural information about Vietnamese society as it relates to industry practice and entrepreneurship across technological, creative and commercial fields. You will have the opportunity to undertake field trips and gain first-hand experience interacting in Vietnamese society during the course. A range of inquiry based activities will be integrated into the blended course delivery mode, and you will be expected to work with peers to proactively seek further information about your specific areas of interest in Vietnam.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course will develop your intercultural capabilities, cultural inquiry and critical reflection skills
Upon successful completion of this course you should be able to:
- Identify, analyze and discuss significant features of Vietnamese culture and society, including appropriate behaviours across a range of social settings in light of relevant intercultural theory.
- Identify and employ strategies for interpreting and relativizing cultural behaviours; adapt your own behaviour and interact appropriately in intercultural situations
- Employ cultural inquiry skills, and demonstrate a capacity to discover through interaction, experience and reflection; communicate the outcomes of your inquiry effectively to a diverse group of peers
- Critically reflect on and evaluate aspects of your own and other cultures with reference to the theoretical framework of intercultural competence
Overview of Learning Activities
Your learning in this course will follow a three part structure. You will begin each of the five course modules online where you will find multimedia, readings and other materials related to the module topic, and will complete a reflective activity. You will then move into the experiential component for the module, which will require you to experience an aspect of Vietnamese society through a field trip, inquiry based activity or interaction with a Vietnamese peer. Finally, you will work in a face-to-face classroom environment where you will critically reflect on intercultural theories and perspectives, and learn a range of strategies for facilitating successful intercultural encounters.
Overview of Learning Resources
All of the multimodal learning resources (videos, podcasts, visual material, readings) used in this course will be provided or linked to directly from the Learning Management System (Blackboard). Additional resources that are current at the time of course delivery (for example, news items) may be provided in class or via a Blackboard announcement.
As an enrolled student of RMIT University you will also be provided with access via the internet to the RMIT Library databases and on-line facilities. Assistance is available from RMIT librarians in searching and navigating the on-line content.

The assessment tasks, their weighting and the course learning outcomes to which they are aligned are as follows:

Feedback will be provided throughout the course in class and/or in online forums. Feedback may be focused on individual or group work, or provided by individual consultation.
