Course Description

Civil engineers responsible for road design are expected to relate long-term environmental, traffic and technical aspects to road design, road materials, safety and future road usage. Hence in this course, you will learn about the entire mechanical design of a road using smart and sustainable pavement materials.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to development of the following program learning outcomes:

  1. Needs, Context and Systems
    • Exposit legal, social, economic, ethical and environmental interests, values, requirements and expectations of key stakeholders
  2. Problem Solving and Design
    • Develop creative and innovative solutions to engineering problems
  3. Professional Practice
    • Understand the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities and bounds of contemporary engineering practice in the specific discipline
  4. Research
    • Be aware of knowledge development and research directions within the engineering discipline
    • Develop creative and innovative solutions to engineering challenges

Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:

  1. Identify, evaluate and design road pavements taking into account sustainability criteria and using innovative materials.
  2. Describe and evaluate the mechanical behaviour of asphalt materials.
  3. Integrate knowledge of smart systems and sensors into the standard design of road pavements.

Overview of Learning Activities

The course activities are structured around lectures and tutorials to develop and consolidate your knowledge. Through assignments, presentations and case studies, you will apply and enhance both your theoretical and practical skills.

Overview of Learning Resources

In this course you will interrogate contemporary and emerging literature with local, national and global relevance in order to inform your specialist knowledge and skills in the area of sustainable road pavements design. Course-related resources will be provided on the Learning Management System, which is accessed through myRMIT. This includes lecture and tutorial material, case studies, supplementary course notes, problem sheets, assignments and references.
