Course Description

You will select and research a particular theoretical construct, model or idea, and investigate how this informs practices and approaches within a selected design discipline.

The design discipline will be selected from a set of options that include visual, physical, virtual, service-based and/or mediated design disciplines. Presentations will form part of a seminar series where you will have the opportunity to learn from the research and findings of your peers.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course supports your development in these program learning outcomes: 

PLO1 Critically review, analyse, consolidate and synthesise knowledge from the history of design, and adapt this knowledge to diverse social, ethical and cultural contexts. 

PLO2 Critically review, analyse, consolidate and synthesise knowledge of diverse design theories, concepts and approaches and adapt this knowledge to local and international contexts. 

PLO8 Develop responsibility and accountability for development of a personal design practice that demonstrates an original, ethical, innovative and professional approach to design.  


Upon completion of this course, you will be able to: 

CLO1 Critically analyse and interpret the formal attributes of historical and contemporary real-world outcomes in the domain of your specified design discipline 

CLO2 Synthesise knowledge of diverse design theories, concepts and approaches, and adapt to local and international social, ethical and cultural contexts 

CLO3 Employ appropriate academic writing, citation, presentation skills and evidence of personal development of your specified design discipline and practice.  


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be required to engage in a range of different activities central to exploring and documenting the fundamentals of your specified design discipline and practice. The intention of the learning activities is to allow students the opportunity to explore, experiment and engage with deeper theoretical design thinking and visual communication. Learning activities support active participation in discussion, debate, critical peer review as an iterative, recurring and continuous process of development.


Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT University will provide you with a range of resources and tools to engage in this course, including studio and workshop facilities, online systems and professional equipment. A selected range of supplies are available, as well as support from technical staff. You will also have access to a wide range of online resources through RMIT Vietnam University Library.


Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course Learning Outcomes and on your development against the Program Learning Outcomes. Assessment may include projects, critiques, reports, journals, and/or presentations individually or in groups. 

Assessment Tasks 

Assessment Task 1: Research Task 1, 50%, CLOs 1 & 2 

Assessment Task 2: Research Task 2, 50%, CLOs 2 & 3
