Course Description

This course introduces you to today’s most important trends in the translation industry. It aims to provide practical knowledge of how to successfully translate with industry standard Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) tools and the necessary knowledge of how to manage a translation project. You will also explore and practice relevant topics, skills and knowledge including editing and formatting tools, translation memories, machine translation, post editing and subtitling which support certain translating and localizing tasks commonly required in the local and global translation market. 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:  

  • Communicate effectively in a range of forms and in different international and cross-cultural contexts, using appropriate modes of communication including electronic, written, graphic, oral and aural forms with audiences within and external to the discipline. 
  • Critically reflect on the role of culture in communication and society and apply this knowledge in a range of cross-cultural interactions locally and globally. 
  • Work independently and in diverse teams to solve problems, using effective communication strategies demonstrating ethical and reflective practice. 
  • Identify, evaluate and critically analyse cultural, historical and theoretical practices which contextualise your professional practice and further study of language. 
  • Evaluate and apply technology to increase efficiency and precision in language sensitive working contexts. 
  • Critically analyse resources, evidence and personal experience to make ethical, socially and politically aware decisions related to language andintercultural interpretations and applications. 
  • Effectively manage your own learning, developing skills in lifelong learning of languages and cross-cultural communication.


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to: 

  1. Use innovative applications of a range of technologies including computer assisted translation software to assist the translation and localization process. 
  2. Analyse and reflect on the potential impact of the technology on translating and localization practice and the broader context of communication across nations and cultures.  
  3. Apply your knowledge of the availability, functions, purpose and mechanisms of the translation technology, subtitling, editing and formatting tools including Machine Translation and Computer Assisted Translation systems to produce translations and related products such as subtitled videos. 



Overview of Learning Activities

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities including lectures, tutorials, workshops, online research and practice, and individual coaching where you will be able to learn, practice and use various software, tools, platforms related to technology in producing translations, subtitling and localization.

You will be provided with essential material and software for learning and practice in this course through our online systems and lab facilities. A list of recommended learning resources will be provided including journal articles, web resources and sample email requests from real clients in the translation and localization industry.  Further details of resources are given in CANVAS.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Assessment Task 1: Translation portfolio & reflection

Assessment Task 2: Group translation project 

Weighting: 40% 

This task assesses the following learning outcomes: CLO2, CLO3 

  

Assessment Task 3: Video Subtitling 

Weighting: 20% 

This task assesses the following learning outcomes: CLO1, CLO3
